Why a uPVC door stops locking

uPVC is less common in the Georgian streets of Bloomsbury, but it turns up on rear extensions, newer blocks of flats and office entrances around Holborn and the Strand. Our engineers carry common uPVC parts and can replace worn handles, gearboxes and cylinders so the door shuts and locks again.

Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.

We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.

The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.

uPVC door repair in Central London: common questions

My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?

Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.

The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?

Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in Central London. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.

How do I pay?

When the job is finished. Card, cash or bank transfer, and you get a written receipt you can use for an insurance claim.

Do nights and weekends cost more?

No. The price is the same at 3am on a Sunday as it is at midday on a Tuesday, bank holidays included.

Do you charge a callout fee?

No callout fee when you go ahead with the job. If you decide not to go ahead after the engineer has arrived, a £49 assessment fee covers the visit. Otherwise you pay for the job itself in Central London, at the price the engineer confirms with you before starting.

How quickly can someone get to me?

An engineer is typically with you in 15 to 20 minutes, and within 30 minutes at most. We give you a time on the phone based on where the nearest engineer is right now.

Can you change the lock on a shared street door in a converted Bloomsbury house?

Yes, though the freeholder or managing agent usually has to agree first when the door is communal. Our engineers fit BS3621 locks and anti-snap cylinders, the quote is free on the phone, and the price is confirmed before work starts.

Will an engineer come out late at night to the Covent Garden and Strand area?

Yes. The line is open 24 hours with no callout fee if you go ahead, and typical arrival is 15 to 20 minutes. The engineer confirms the price before starting work.
