Why a uPVC door stops locking
Rear entrances, side doors and newer flats in and around the City sometimes have uPVC or composite doors, and a door that will not lock usually points to a worn handle or multipoint mechanism.
Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.
We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.
The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.

uPVC door repair in the City of London: common questions
My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?
Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.
The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?
Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in the City of London. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.
How does pricing work?
Tell us the door, the lock and what has happened, and we give you a free quote on the phone. When the engineer arrives, they check the lock and confirm the final price with you before starting any work. Nothing is done without your agreement. A £49 assessment fee applies only if you cancel after the engineer has arrived.
How quickly can someone get to me?
An engineer is typically with you in 15 to 20 minutes, and within 30 minutes at most. We give you a time on the phone based on where the nearest engineer is right now.
How do I pay?
When the job is finished. Card, cash or bank transfer, and you get a written receipt you can use for an insurance claim.
Do you repair composite doors too?
Yes. Composite doors use the same multipoint locks and euro cylinders, so we repair them the same way.
Can an engineer attend a City office or shop at night or at the weekend?
Yes. The phone line is answered 24 hours a day and there is no callout fee if you go ahead, so an engineer can attend after hours. If the premises are leased, tell us on the call whether you are the tenant or the landlord, because the managing agent can have a say in which lock is fitted.
Do you cover Clerkenwell, Hatton Garden and Shoreditch as well as the Square Mile?
Yes. The same 24-hour line covers the EC postcode area, including Clerkenwell, Hatton Garden, the Barbican, Finsbury and the Shoreditch edge, and we also attend Aldgate, Whitechapel and Bermondsey nearby.
