Why a uPVC door stops locking
Many newer flats and houses in Leith, the Gyle and Wester Hailes have uPVC or composite doors, and a door that will not lock usually points to a worn handle or multipoint mechanism.
Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.
We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.
The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.
Locksmiths who know Edinburgh
Many Old Town and Southside flats around the university are let to students and festival visitors, so keys go astray and locks need re-keying more often between tenants.

uPVC door repair in Edinburgh: common questions
My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?
Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.
The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?
Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in Edinburgh. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.
Do nights and weekends cost more?
No. The price is the same at 3am on a Sunday as it is at midday on a Tuesday, bank holidays included.
Do you charge a callout fee?
No callout fee when you go ahead with the job. If you decide not to go ahead after the engineer has arrived, a £49 assessment fee covers the visit. Otherwise you pay for the job itself in Edinburgh, at the price the engineer confirms with you before starting.
How does pricing work?
Tell us the door, the lock and what has happened, and we give you a free quote on the phone. When the engineer arrives, they check the lock and confirm the final price with you before starting any work. Nothing is done without your agreement. A £49 assessment fee applies only if you cancel after the engineer has arrived.
How do I pay?
When the job is finished. Card, cash or bank transfer, and you get a written receipt you can use for an insurance claim.
Can you open a flat door on a shared stair in a tenement or New Town building?
Yes. Period doors in listed buildings can be repaired or fitted with a suitable lock, but any change to how the door looks may need consent from the council.
Do you cover Leith, Musselburgh and Livingston as well as central Edinburgh?
Yes. The same 24-hour line covers the whole EH postcode area, including Dalkeith, Penicuik, Haddington, Bathgate and Queensferry.
