Why a uPVC door stops locking
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses in Hereford now have uPVC or composite front doors, and a door that will not lock usually means a worn handle or a faulty multipoint mechanism.
Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.
We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.
The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.

uPVC door repair in Hereford: common questions
My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?
Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.
The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?
Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in Hereford. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.
How quickly can someone get to me?
An engineer is typically with you in 15 to 20 minutes, and within 30 minutes at most. We give you a time on the phone based on where the nearest engineer is right now.
Do you charge a callout fee?
No callout fee when you go ahead with the job. If you decide not to go ahead after the engineer has arrived, a £49 assessment fee covers the visit. Otherwise you pay for the job itself in Hereford, at the price the engineer confirms with you before starting.
Do nights and weekends cost more?
No. The price is the same at 3am on a Sunday as it is at midday on a Tuesday, bank holidays included.
How does pricing work?
Tell us the door, the lock and what has happened, and we give you a free quote on the phone. When the engineer arrives, they check the lock and confirm the final price with you before starting any work. Nothing is done without your agreement. A £49 assessment fee applies only if you cancel after the engineer has arrived.
Do you cover Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye and Leominster as well as Hereford?
Yes. The same 24-hour line covers the whole HR postcode area, including Bromyard, Kington and Hay-on-Wye as well as those three towns. Give us your postcode on the call and we will confirm the arrival time and give you a free quote.
Can you repair the lock on an old timber door in a black-and-white village cottage?
Yes. Cottage doors in places such as Weobley are often old timber fitted with a rim lock or a worn mortice. The engineer looks at the door first, repairs or replaces the lock to suit it, and confirms the price before starting work.
