Why a uPVC door stops locking
Many Ipswich estates and newer developments in Kesgrave, Martlesham Heath and Stowmarket have uPVC or composite doors, and a door that will not lock usually points to a worn handle or multipoint mechanism.
Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.
We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.
The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.
Locksmiths who know Ipswich

uPVC door repair in Ipswich: common questions
My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?
Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.
The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?
Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in Ipswich. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.
Do you charge a callout fee?
No callout fee when you go ahead with the job. If you decide not to go ahead after the engineer has arrived, a £49 assessment fee covers the visit. Otherwise you pay for the job itself in Ipswich, at the price the engineer confirms with you before starting.
How do I pay?
When the job is finished. Card, cash or bank transfer, and you get a written receipt you can use for an insurance claim.
Do nights and weekends cost more?
No. The price is the same at 3am on a Sunday as it is at midday on a Tuesday, bank holidays included.
Which areas around Ipswich do you cover?
Every IP postcode on the mainland, plus nearby towns such as Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Stowmarket, Colchester, Kesgrave, Martlesham. If you are not sure, call and we will tell you straight away which engineer can reach you.
Do you cover Felixstowe, Woodbridge and the Suffolk coast as well as Ipswich?
Yes. The same 24-hour line covers the whole IP postcode area, including Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Southwold, Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds, and reaches into Norfolk at Diss and Thetford. Give us your postcode when you call and we will confirm the arrival time.
My insurer wants a British Standard lock on the front door of our Victorian terrace. What do we need?
For a timber door, a BS3621 mortice deadlock is the usual answer, and it is the standard many insurers ask for. The engineer checks the door on arrival, explains the options and confirms the price before starting.
