Why a uPVC door stops locking

Estates such as Ingleby Barwick, Coulby Newham and Wynyard have many uPVC and composite front doors, and the handles, hinges and multipoint locks on them wear with daily use.

Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.

We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.

The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.

uPVC door repair in Middlesbrough: common questions

My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?

Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.

The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?

Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in Middlesbrough. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.

Do nights and weekends cost more?

No. The price is the same at 3am on a Sunday as it is at midday on a Tuesday, bank holidays included.

How does pricing work?

Tell us the door, the lock and what has happened, and we give you a free quote on the phone. When the engineer arrives, they check the lock and confirm the final price with you before starting any work. Nothing is done without your agreement. A £49 assessment fee applies only if you cancel after the engineer has arrived.

Do you charge a callout fee?

No callout fee when you go ahead with the job. If you decide not to go ahead after the engineer has arrived, a £49 assessment fee covers the visit. Otherwise you pay for the job itself in Middlesbrough, at the price the engineer confirms with you before starting.

How quickly can someone get to me?

An engineer is typically with you in 15 to 20 minutes, and within 30 minutes at most. We give you a time on the phone based on where the nearest engineer is right now.

Do you cover Hartlepool, Redcar and Stockton as well as Middlesbrough?

Yes. The same 24-hour line covers the whole TS postcode area, including Billingham, Thornaby, Yarm, Marske, Saltburn, Stokesley and Sedgefield.

Is it worth fitting a better lock on the back door of an older terrace?

It is a sensible step, because a back door that opens onto a yard or lane is easy to reach out of sight. The engineer can fit a BS3621 lock, say what suits the gate as well, and confirm the price before starting.
