Why a uPVC door stops locking

uPVC doors are common on flats and houses in Battersea, Wandsworth and Putney, and the usual faults are a dropped door, a worn multipoint mechanism or a handle that will not lift. Our engineers carry common uPVC parts and can adjust hinges, fit a new gearbox or replace the cylinder with an anti-snap one.

Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock: one handle drives a gearbox in the door edge, which throws hooks and rollers into the frame. When the handle goes floppy, spins, or will not lift, the gearbox has usually worn out. When the door needs force to lock, it has usually dropped on its hinges.

We replace the gearbox or the full strip when they have failed, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes cleanly again. We carry the common gearbox sizes, so most repairs are done in one visit.

The same goes for uPVC patio doors and other double-glazed doors: multipoint locks, handles, gearboxes and cylinders are repaired or replaced the same way.

uPVC door repair in Southwest London: common questions

My uPVC door won't lock. What is wrong?

Usually the door has dropped, so the hooks no longer line up with the frame, or the gearbox inside has worn out. Adjusting the door starts from £79; a new gearbox from £89.

The handle spins and the door will not open. Can you help?

Yes. That is a failed gearbox, one of the most common uPVC calls we get in Southwest London. We open the door and fit a new gearbox.

How does pricing work?

Tell us the door, the lock and what has happened, and we give you a free quote on the phone. When the engineer arrives, they check the lock and confirm the final price with you before starting any work. Nothing is done without your agreement. A £49 assessment fee applies only if you cancel after the engineer has arrived.

How do I pay?

When the job is finished. Card, cash or bank transfer, and you get a written receipt you can use for an insurance claim.

Which areas around Southwest London do you cover?

Every SW postcode on the mainland, plus nearby towns such as Clapham, Battersea, Tooting, Balham, Wandsworth, Putney. If you are not sure, call and we will tell you straight away which engineer can reach you.

How quickly can someone get to me?

An engineer is typically with you in 15 to 20 minutes, and within 30 minutes at most. We give you a time on the phone based on where the nearest engineer is right now.

Do you cover Wimbledon, Streatham and Putney as well as Clapham and Battersea?

Yes. The same 24-hour line covers the whole SW postcode area, including Chelsea, Fulham, Brixton, Balham, Tooting, Wandsworth, Barnes and Wimbledon.

Can you fit a BS3621 lock on a flat door in a Victorian conversion in Balham or Fulham?

Usually yes, if the door is solid enough to take it. Many insurers ask for a BS3621 lock, so the engineer looks at the door, says which lock suits it and confirms the price before any work begins.
